1. How to use this calculator:

   2. 1) Click on a radio button to choose the kind of solvent you will use in your polymer.
      1. If your desired solvent is not on the list enter the density of your own solvent in g/cm3 (found on the MSDS).
   3. 2) Enter the amount of solvent you will use. This is approximately how much the recipe makes.
      1. Make sure your bottle you will be mixing this in is big enough (or small enough) to contain this amount
      2. When the mixture is mixing, it will rise in the jar a little.
      3. Leave at lease 1/2" (if not more) between the top line of the solvent and the bottom of the lid.
   4. 3) Enter the weight of the solid to weight of the solvent ratio as a percentage.
      1. This is sometimes denoted as wt/wt%. This ratio will determine how viscous your final polymer is.
      2. The higher the percentage the thicker the polymer is going to be.
      3. For spinning somewhere between 4-7% is typical.
   5. 4) Enter the desired concentration of NLO material.
      1. We use Dispers Red 1 (DR1) from Sigma Aldrich. Typical values are 16-25%.
      2. Keep in mind that some solvents do not dissolve DR1 very well.
   6. 5) Press the "Calculate amount of PMMA and DR1"
   7. 6) The amount of pmma and Dr1 you should use in your recipe will be found in the corresponding columns on the right.

   9. Alternative Method: Find wt/wt and concentration from known amounts.
      1. Sometimes the polymer has already been made, or the amount (in g) of materials is available.
      2. In these cases you may want to find the wt/wt% and concentration so that you can compare results of different recipes.
   10. 7) Enter in the amount of PMMA or APC and the amount of DR1 in the appropriate boxes on the right column.
   11. 8) Press the "Calculate wt/wt and concentration"
   12. 9) These values will appear in the corresponding boxes on the left.
